Pomona Community and City Information

Pomona is a village located in the towns of Ramapo and Haverstraw in Rockland County, New York. It is located about 35 miles from New York City. Pomona shares borders with the communities of Monsey, Mount Ivy, and New Hempstead.

Pomona has been an incorporated community since 1967 and has its own village hall, which includes a building department. The zip code of Pomona is 10970.

Pomona is a suburban community with mostly residential areas surrounded by heavy woods. The streets of Pomona are full of beautiful trees which always offer a quite atmosphere. Pomona includes premier real estate of mostly modest and upscale homes in a wonderful location.

Pomona is located within a well developed network of roads, used for local and distant travel. Major local roads passing through the village are New York State Route 306, New York State Route 45, and US Route 202, all of which host major local businesses. Pomona has great access to multiple highways for far travel. The Palisades Interstate Parkway (Exits 12&13) is restricted to passenger cars only and runs in the north-south direction, including to New York City via George Washington Bridge. The PIP connects to Interstate 287, (Exits 9E/9W), which branches off in all directions including east to Westchester and south to New Jersey. Public Transportation in Pomona is provided by the buses of Transport of Rockland (TOR.)

On its west side, Pomona is bound by the Harriman State Park, which offers a large variety of outdoor activities. Lake Sebago, Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati have man made beaches that offer a unique experience of swimming, sunbathing and picnicking in a forest. There are over 200 miles of hiking trails and miles of scenic driveways through the mountains and trees of Harriman State Park. The dozens of lakes in the park offer excellent fishing opportunities and boating, and during wintertime ice fishing and snowmobile use is available. There are numerous camping sites where campers can settle down and enjoy the atmosphere, including the Beaver Pond Campgrounds. There is a variety of diverse wildlife in Harriman State Park that offer visitors a beautiful animal sightseeing experience. Anthony Wayne Recreation Area of the park offers Picnic and barbeque facilities, hiking paths, bike trail, play areas, cross-country ski trails.

If Harriman State Park doesn’t offer enough, Pomona has plenty of recreational facilities and areas for residents and visitors to enjoy. Eugene Levy Memorial Park includes a pond, walkways, large playgrounds, tennis/handball wall. The adjoining Herb Reisman Sports Complex includes Little League field, soccer field, sand volleyball courts, basketball and tennis courts, paved walking path, and picnic pavilion. Pomona Middle School includes multiple athletic fields and indoor gymnasium open to the public at certain times.

Pomona’s Minisceongo Golf Club is a private country club that includes an 18 hole golf course, driving range, pro shop, clubhouse, swimming pool and tennis courts, all in a beautiful environment by Mount Ivy County Park.

Pomona’s wooded and natural environment has attracted two excellent day camps that offer a ton of activities. Deer Mountain Day Camp covers 25 acres and includes swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts, athletic fields, a stream and dozens of buildings for housing and other activities. Nearby Camp Ramaquois includes over 50 multi-purpose buildings that offer many indoor activities, athletic and educational . The camp includes a large lake, many sports fields, swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts, and many facilities that offer activities ranging from archery to gymnastics. Both camps are considered superb and attract children from nearby counties of Bergen (NJ) , Orange, Westchester, and even New York City.

Pomona is served by the East Ramapo Central School District and is home to Pomona Middle School, which serves students in grades 7-8. Some of Pomona’s students are within North Rockland Central School District.

According to the United States Census Bureau, as of 2000 Pomona has a population of more than 2,700 residents. The village has a total area of 2.4 square miles. It is located at a slight elevation of about 450 feet above sea level.

The racial demographics of Pomona are 79.05% White, 10.38% African American, 0.18% Native American, 6.64% Asian, 1.61% from other races, and 2.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race are 5.94% of the population.

Pomona has more than 1,100 households, which are some of the wealthiest in Rockland County. The median income for a household in the village is $103,608, and the median income for a family is $108,399.

Pomona is home to the Sri Ranganatha Temple, a Hindu temple that features exotic far eastern architecture and sculptures that has become a landmark of the village and of Rockland County. In addition to accommodating the local small Hindu population, the temple is an impressive structure that’s a must see for locals and visitors. Additionally, Pomona is home to the Ladentown United Methodist Church, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pomona is home to Hi-Tor Animal Care Center, the only animal care and control center in Rockland County. Pomona is also home to the Hudson Valley Humane Society, an animal shelter that offers great adoption opportunities. Both facilities provide great services to animals and educational/volunteering opportunities to the community.

Pomona hosts Rockland County’s department of social services , department of mental health and the Summit Park Hospital Nursing Care Center, all located in the Robert L. Yeager Health Center complex.
